Avila’s Core Principles
The Avila Premise is simple–that it is best to teach outdoor skills in little indoor facilities if you want to achieve big-time results. This is not “indoor soccer” the Sport – this is outdoor soccer being trained indoors in little, local, climate-controlled synthetic grass facilities. Why? The rationale is simple yet compelling: this method stands as the most efficacious path to development.
Continuity is key. Our distinctive methodology emphasizes the cultivation of outdoor soccer skills within a stable and consistent environment, fostering remarkable improvements and ensuring standout performances on the field.
In 2009, Coach Eryck was excited to come across this ABC Nightline feature segment titled “Myelin Development in the Brain,” which discussed Daniel Coyle’s seminal book, “The Talent Code.” The segment described how children develop skills in small, local indoor facilities.
It was surreal to casually watch television and hear such a specific report that precisely described what we do at Avila Soccer.
His favorite part of the segment was when they mentioned, “They are often faceless places at the end of shopping malls beyond the edge of town.” It was amusing because, at the time, we were hard to locate and we didn’t even have a sign on our building.
The book echoed many of the principles we had already been practicing at Avila Soccer since 2002, so it was gratifying to see that our methods align so closely with the concepts of deep practice, ignition, and master coaching that Coyle describes.
What fascinated Coach Eryck the most was the direct reference and acknowledgment of Brazilian masters such as Pelé and Ronaldinho, who relied on small indoor facilities to develop their trailblazing skills. These legends honed their abilities in confined indoor spaces, which had a generational impact on the sport. These environments demanded focused, repetitive practice in a challenging setting, leading to their exceptional skill mastery.
This realization made Coach Eryck feel confident that he was on the right track all along, especially when he decided to open a soccer field in a shopping center—an unconventional choice at the time.

Mantra:
Timing Beats Speed, Precision Beats Power.
In soccer, as in life, it is not merely the swiftness of one’s stride or the strength of one’s frame that dictates success, but rather the keen perception of the game and the execution of actions with precise accuracy.
Our coaching philosophy, therefore, places paramount importance on the virtues of timing and accuracy in technique, while also nurturing the capacity for players to make precisely timed tactical decisions.
In every training session, Avila trainers strive to transcend the mere kinetic applications of our mantra, recognizing that its essence extends beyond technique to encompass the art of tactical positioning.
Offensively, a run timed to perfection can outmaneuver a swifter defender.
Defensively, a tackle executed with impeccable timing can dispossess even the fastest attacker without the blemish of a foul.
On a personal note, Coach Avila believes that our mantra, “Timing beats speed, precision beats power,” perfectly captures the universal appeal of soccer. The beauty of the game lies in its inclusivity, welcoming players of all body types. Unlike many other sports, soccer does not require a specific physique or exceptional speed. Instead, it celebrates those who master precise technique and well-timed strategy. This timeless truth has been proven repeatedly by countless famous players who, despite not being speed merchants or brawny powerhouses, have become some of the most impactful figures in the sport.
